Falling

The age of falling things 

arrived gradually but not quietly.

Mountainsides have been snapping off their mountains for years.

People hear them from far away,

even from the past,

where they built entire cultures 

in the shadows of glaciers.

It is painful to watch your legacy 

perish, slowly, inexorably, but punctuated

by great percussive cataclysms,

especially when your legacy is the earth.
